Age Calculation Guide
Chronological Age in Months
Some assessments — particularly for infants and toddlers — require age reported in total months rather than years, months, and days. This guide explains the conversion formula, shows worked examples, and provides a quick-reference table for the most common age values.
The Formula: Converting Age to Months
Whole months: (Years × 12) + Months
Decimal months: (Years × 12) + Months + (Days ÷ 30.44)
30.44 is the average number of days per month (365.25 ÷ 12). Most clinical protocols use the whole-months formula and round down — meaning a child aged 2;5;29 is still in the 29-month band, not yet 30 months.
Worked Examples
Age: 1;4;10
Whole months: (1×12)+4 = 16
Decimal months: 16 + (10÷30.44) ≈ 16.33
→ 16 months (16.33 decimal)
Age: 2;5;15
Whole months: (2×12)+5 = 29
Decimal months: 29 + (15÷30.44) ≈ 29.49
→ 29 months (29.49 decimal)
Age: 3;0;0
Whole months: (3×12)+0 = 36
Decimal months: 36 + 0 = 36.00
→ 36 months exactly
Age: 4;11;28
Whole months: (4×12)+11 = 59
Decimal months: 59 + (28÷30.44) ≈ 59.92
→ 59 months (59.92 decimal)
Why Some Assessments Use Age in Months
In the first three years of life, development changes rapidly — sometimes week to week. A child aged 12 months and a child aged 15 months have very different expected abilities. Monthly-resolution norm tables provide finer accuracy for assessments in this age range.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate chronological age in months?
Total months = (years × 12) + months. For a decimal value, add days ÷ 30.44. Example: age 2;5;15 = (2×12)+5 = 29 whole months, or 29.49 decimal months.
Why do some assessments use age in months?
Infant and toddler assessments use monthly resolution because development changes rapidly in the first 3 years. Monthly norm bands provide finer accuracy than yearly bands for this age group.
How many months is 2 years and 6 months?
30 months. Formula: (2 × 12) + 6 = 30.
Do you round up or down when converting to months?
Most standardized test protocols round down to the nearest completed month. A child aged 2;5;29 is in the 29-month band, not yet 30 months. Always check the specific test manual.
What is the difference between total months and months remaining?
Total months is the full count from birth (e.g., 2;5;0 = 29 total months). 'Months remaining' is just the middle component in the Y;M;D format (the 5 in 2;5;15). These are different values.
