How do you calculate chronological age?

Subtract the birth date from the test or reference date and express the result in years, months, and days. When the birth day is larger than the test day, apply the ASHA 30-day borrowing method: borrow one month from the months column and add 30 days to the days column before subtracting.

What is the ASHA 30-day borrowing method?

The ASHA 30-day borrowing method is the clinical standard for calculating exact chronological age. When the birth day exceeds the test day, one month is borrowed and treated as exactly 30 days — regardless of the actual days in that month. This ensures consistent results across GFTA-3, CELF-5, PPVT-5, and other standardized assessments.

What is the difference between chronological age and corrected age?

Chronological age is the time elapsed since birth. Corrected age accounts for prematurity — subtract the number of weeks premature from the chronological age. For example, a baby born 8 weeks early with a chronological age of 6 months has a corrected age of about 4 months. ASHA recommends using corrected age for developmental assessments until the child is 2 years old.

Why does a one-day age error matter on assessments like GFTA-3 or CELF-5?

Standardized assessments use age-normed tables divided into narrow bands — often just one month wide. A single day's error can place a child in the wrong norm group, producing an incorrect standard score. ASHA guidelines require chronological age to be calculated to the exact day.

For all clinical assessments and legal purposes, chronological age is the standard.

How do I calculate chronological age in Excel?

Use the DATEDIF function. For years: =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"Y"), for months: =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"YM"), for days: =DATEDIF(A1,B1,"MD"). Replace A1 with the birth date cell and B1 with the test date cell. This also works in Google Sheets.
